Why Tree Health Matters

A tree will develop co-leaders, girdling roots, and many crossing or crowded limbs—often resulting in dormancy or even death. One dead or broken limb will stiffen and stop swaying with the wind. That rigid limb becomes a saw, cutting into the live limb beside it. And it continues from there. Improper cuts—especially from an unprofessional job—prevent the tree from compartmentalizing and sealing. The result: the tree loses vacuum pressure. A tree functions like a human heart. It’s a pump, and it needs to maintain efficiency to stay healthy. Another good analogy for trees is to compare them to children. Guidance goes a long ways in what they mature into.

Red Flags

Here are a few pit falls to avoid while choosing an arborist.

1. If you’re “arborist” shows up to bid with a flatbed trailer or in his wife’s SUV, beware. This is often a guy who can’t pass a drug test for a job or lawn service guy that likes arborist wages. They will be in the lower bid range but lack education, experience, insurance, etc. We routinely get calls to finish what these guys have started and I get to see firsthand the broken windows, fences, roof damage, etc., and the trees in horrible shape with permanent damage. These guys often quote to “lift” or trim the lower limbs off. This is not a solution but a continuing problem. Lawn guys think trees need continuous trimming like grass but this is not true. We train trees to grow and mature in a desired manner. The “limb lift” will be a yearly reoccurring problem because each next level of limbs will continue growing towards the ground as long as you ignore the overcrowded, matted mess of limbs in the canopy. You can’t blame the lower limbs, they are looking for light and trying to survive until you call a real arborist.

2. If you have to call your tree service every couple of years to prune and the bill remains relatively the same. An arborist can prune on a approximate 10 year trajectory. It is a scam business model to return every 2 to 3 years and get your money multiple times as opposed to once. A customer would never know this unless the strategy was exposed by another arborist. When I gain new customers that were previous customers to other tree companies, I can clearly see many cuts that should have been made but were left for future billing. These cuts would be page 1 in the I SA manual. What I’m saying is it is not possible to be certified and this neglectful, this is clearly a business model for multiple payments. I would rather get 2 to 3 referrals from a customer then knowingly gouge them 2 to 3 times when their trees could have been done right the first time. And this practice is not only done at your expense but the health of the tree. When the tree could be putting energy and resources into trunk strength DBH or maturing desired limbs, the tree is wasting energy on problem limbs that will fail or require future removal. Several companies in the Lubbock area are notorious for this. Water sprouts after pruning cuts do occur but these are relatively cheap and easy to clean up. We actually seal and prevents most water sprouts.

Pricing

Estimates can vary greatly between different companies. A lot of the variance is the level of service and education being offered. What the price really comes down to is value. What are you actually getting for your money. We can’t promise to have a lower bid than the lawn mower guys, uninsured, uneducated, inexperienced, etc. That is impossible. We can not help people like that. What we can do, is offer the best value for your hard earned money. I guarantee we will have the best value. We desire to help people have the healthiest and most valuable trees possible, develop lasting relationships with our clients and continue to grow the company to be able to help more trees and people.

Payment

$100 non-refundable deposit is required to get a contract and work date. The work date is to schedule crew members, equipment needed etc., for your job. This is waved on previous customers that are already in the system. The deposit is applied to the final bill.

We do not ask for a percentage of the total before the job is finished. Upon completion we provide the final bill. Which will be the same as the bid price. When the customer is available, we like to look at the work with them and make sure they are happy with the look.
